What does social commerce mean?
Social commerce is selling where people already scroll: the discovery, the pitch and the checkout happen inside the social app. Here is the plain definition, the numbers behind it, and how it differs from running ads that send people to a website.
What is social commerce, in one definition?
Social commerce means the whole purchase happens inside a social platform. A creator or brand video surfaces the product, the viewer taps the tag, and they check out without leaving the app. TikTok Shop is the clearest example in the US today. Instagram and Facebook Shops, YouTube Shopping and Pinterest are the others.
That is different from social media marketing, where an ad or a post sends people to your website to buy. It is also different from affiliate marketing in the old sense, where a blogger drops a link. In social commerce the content, the storefront and the payment are the same screen, which is why conversion rates and impulse purchases run higher and why creators matter so much more than ad creative.
